Aerial Photography Pilot Guide

Aerial photography is a valuable tool for realtors to showcase properties and the surrounding area to potential buyers. This guide will provide an overview of the equipment and techniques used for aerial photography, as well as some tips for getting the most out of your aerial photos.

Before I begin, in order to conduct any drone services, you must have a remote pilot certificate (Part 107) issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Any activity other than pure recreation is considered a commercial operation and is regulated as such. For more up to date information please visit the FAA Drone Website

Equipment

  1. Camera: The most important piece of equipment for ground photography is the camera. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a high resolution and the ability to shoot in raw format is recommended. Additionally, a wide-angle lens is a must-have for capturing the full scope of the property and surrounding area.

  2. Aerial Platform: There are several options for aerial platforms, including drones, airplanes, and helicopters. Drones are the most popular choice for realtors due to their affordability and ease of use. However, it's important to note that some areas may have restrictions on drone usage, so be sure to check with local authorities before using a drone.

  3. Tripod: A sturdy tripod is essential for keeping the camera steady during flight. A tripod with a remote control or trigger release is also recommended to minimize camera shake.

Techniques

  1. Plan your shots: Before you take off, plan out the shots you want to capture. This will help you make the most of your time in the air and ensure that you get the shots you need.

  2. Keep the horizon level: One of the most common mistakes in aerial photography is not keeping the horizon level. This can cause your photos to look tilted or distorted. Use the built-in spirit level or a separate bubble level to ensure that your camera is level.

  3. Use the right exposure settings: Aerial photos often require a different exposure than ground-level shots. Use a fast shutter speed to minimize motion blur and a low aperture to capture the most detail.

  4. Capture a variety of angles: Instead of just capturing photos of the property from one angle, try capturing photos from different angles to showcase the property and its surroundings in the best light.

Tips

  1. Check the weather: The weather can have a big impact on aerial photography. Avoid shooting on days with high winds or low clouds, as these conditions can make it difficult to get the shots you need.

  2. Use editing software: Use editing software to enhance your photos and make them stand out. Adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation to make your photos pop.

  3. Get permission: Before flying your drone or aircraft, be sure you are authorized to do so.

  4. Get a bird's-eye view: Instead of shooting straight down, try to get a bird's-eye view of the property and surrounding area. This can help to showcase the property and its surroundings in a more dynamic way.

By following these tips and techniques, you can create stunning aerial photos that will help you showcase properties and the surrounding area to potential buyers. Remember to always be safe, follow the rules and regulations, and enjoy the process.

Safe flying!
